Kittoch Medical Practice is contracted by NHS Lanarkshire to provide essential services, including the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, health promotion, and preventative care.
In addition to these core services, the practice also provides a range of Additional and Enhanced Services, which include:
- Chronic disease management (e.g. diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension)
- Cervical screening and women’s health services
- Minor surgery procedures
- Mental health support and reviews
- Health checks and screening programmes
- Contraceptive services and sexual health advice

Newly Diagnosed with Cancer
Kittoch Medical Practice is committed to offering both practical and emotional support to patients who have recently been diagnosed with cancer.
We are here to support you at every stage and will do our best to ensure you receive the care and guidance you need.
We understand that a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, and while we may not have all the answers, we aim to guide you to the most appropriate people and services who can help.
- Referral to our Community Link Worker for advice on benefits and financial support you may be entitled to
- Access to physiotherapy input and mobility aids (e.g. walking sticks, walking frames)
- Signposting and referrals to services that can assist with home adaptations (e.g. handrails and safety equipment)
- Referral to Macmillan Cancer Support services
- Support from our District Nursing team where appropriate
- Connection with specialist nurses to support you and your family throughout your cancer journey

Fear of Flying
Kittoch Medical Practice has taken the decision not to prescribe diazepam for fear of flying. This is based on clinical guidance and patient safety concerns, including risks of sedation, impaired judgement, reduced ability to respond in emergencies, and the potential for adverse reactions or dependency.

Child Health Surveillance
Your baby’s six-week examination will be carried out by one of the GPs at the practice. It is important to register your baby as soon as possible so that they can access healthcare and we can ensure you are contacted in good time for their six-week check.
We will usually contact you around four weeks after birth to arrange the appointment, which is carried out between 6–8 weeks of age. It is very important that you attend this appointment.
All routine childhood immunisations are provided by the Health Visitors. The Health Board will contact you directly when your child is due to receive their vaccinations.
Contraceptive Services
The team at Kittoch Medical Centre provide family planning advice and monitoring of contraception including the traditional ‘pill check’.
There is recent evidence that there can be a more effective way to take the combined contraceptive pill than the 21:7 method you may be used to.
Maternity Services
We will support you throughout your pregnancy journey, from pre-conception and fertility advice through to antenatal care and postnatal follow-up.
In most cases, once you find out you are pregnant, you can self-refer to maternity services by calling the booking line on
0141 531 4180 (Lanarkshire) or
0141 232 4005 (Glasgow).
If you have a long-term medical condition or are taking regular prescribed medication, please contact the practice so we can advise you on how this may affect your pregnancy and ensure you receive appropriate care and monitoring.
Joint Injections
We offer joint injections as part of our treatment options for musculoskeletal conditions.
Dr Lewis Jackson can carry out joint Injections for the shoulder and Dr Laura Greenwood can carry out shoulder & knee joint injections.
If you feel you may benefit from one of these procedures, please book a telephone consultation. We will discuss the procedure with you and, if appropriate, arrange an appointment for treatment.
High Risk Medicines Monitoring
This service involves the monitoring of patients taking high risk medications, such as methotrexate and other immunosuppressive medicines.
Monitoring usually includes reviewing blood test results taken in our Treatment Room, along with blood pressure checks and urine tests where required.
This service helps ensure your medication is safe and effective, and allows routine monitoring to be carried out in the community, helping to reduce the need for hospital visits
Vaccination Services
All vaccinations are now provided by NHS Lanarkshire’s vaccination service – with the exception of travel vaccinations which are delivered by certain community pharmacies. GP practices no longer have responsibility for providing vaccinations.
How can people contact the service?
The service was initially set up to receive professional referrals only. However, a local number for people to self-refer for vaccinations is currently being set up. Further information will be published, once this has been established.

The vaccination service provides a range of vaccines from centres that were set up to deliver the covid-19 vaccine.
These are:

- Braidfute Retail Park, Lanark
- Fernhill Community Centre, Rutherglen

Private Non-NHS Services
In addition to our NHS work, which remains our priority, we are able to provide a limited number of non-NHS services.
As these are private services, they are not covered by the NHS and are charged at a set fee in line with guidance from the British Medical Association (BMA).
Examples of private services include:
- Insurance forms and paperwork
- HGV medicals
- Adoption medicals
- Camp America medicals
- DVLA medical reports
Please note that we do not complete Power of Attorney forms within the practice. If this is required, you should contact your solicitor for assistance.
Sexual Health Services
Sexual health services in Lanarkshire provide confidential support for a range of needs, including sexual health check-ups, infection screening, contact tracing, and contraceptive advice and provision (such as the coil).

Fit Notes
Employees can self-certify for up to 7 days of illness. After this period, if you remain absent from work due to a medical reason, you will require a fit note (previously known as a ‘sick line).
If you feel you need a fit note, please contact our reception team who will take your details and pass your request to a GP for review. The GP may issue a fit note or may need to contact you for further discussion before a decision is made.
Please note, fit notes cannot be issued for conditions that have not been previously discussed with a GP. A consultation is required to ensure the GP can issue the fit note appropriately and in good clinical judgement.
Cervical Screening
A smear test could save your life and going for screening is the best thing you can do to prevent cervical cancer. It is offered to anyone with a cervix who is aged 25 and 64 who lives in Scotland. Some people who have changes that need to be monitored may be offered screening until they’re 70.

Annual Chronic Disease Review
We offer annual reviews for patients with long-term conditions including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, asthma, and COPD. These reviews help us monitor your condition, review your treatment, and ensure you are receiving the right support.
Where Your Review Takes Place:
- Asthma and COPD reviews are carried out by our Practice Nurse.
- All other chronic disease monitoring appointments are carried out in our Treatment Room.
How to Book Your Review:
We will send you a text message during your month of birth inviting you to book your annual review.
Please contact the practice when you receive this message so we can arrange your Treatment Room appointment.
At the time of booking, we will advise you if you need to provide a urine sample.
Please note: only patients with diabetes or chronic kidney disease (CKD) are required to provide a urine sample.
What Happens in the Treatment Room:
In your Treatment Room appointment, the healthcare assistant or nurse will carry out routine monitoring such as:
- Blood tests (e.g. HbA1c for diabetes and cholesterol)
- Blood pressure check
- Height and weight
- Smoking status
- Urine sample testing (if required)
Any concerns identified will be reviewed and referred to a GP if necessary.
Diabetic Eye Screening:
If you have diabetes, you will also be invited for a diabetic eye screening appointment, which takes place outside the practice. This checks for signs of diabetic retinopathy.
We strongly encourage attendance, as early detection helps prevent serious complications, including vision loss.
